National Epilepsy Care Center: Comprehensive National Support System for Epilepsy

Abstract
The National Epilepsy Care Center (NECC) designated and supported by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Korea was first established in July 2020 to improve the quality of life of epilepsy patients across the medical and welfare fields in Korea. The NECC provides more direct social services to patients by conducting the projects of creating a treatment environment, supporting research, providing social services, and improving awareness. Counseling and consultation are provided through the first in Asia ¡®Epilepsy Help Line¡¯ 1670-5775, and projects such as educational leaflet and video production, e-learning education, suicide prevention project, self-help group program, volunteer activity, and awareness improvement activity are underway. Epilepsy Help Line and programs are provided with the goal of improving the quality of medical care Epilepsy foundations in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia have advanced epilepsy help system ahead of Korea and have established a network of regional help centers, and various patient support programs, donations and fundraising are active. In the future, the NECC will more activate epilepsy surgery and neurostimulation, and it is to be expanded as a level-4 regional epilepsy treatment center project so that epilepsy patients across the country can receive the same level of epilepsy treatment. In addition, social welfare services such as epilepsy education for each subject, public awareness improvement activities, customized welfare information arrangement for epilepsy patients, and community resource development will be gradually expanded.
